Apex College Prep will again offer a Jr. SAT Class for 6th and 8th grade students. The main purpose of the class will be to prepare students to qualify for the Johns Hopkins University’s Talent Search program.
Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth (CTY) sponsors a yearly program to identify gifted 7th and 8th grade students, the CTY Talent Search. 6th and 8th grade students can qualify for the first level of the CTY Talent Search by achieving over 550 and 600, respectively, on the Math or Critical Reading sections of the SAT Reasoning Test. Johns Hopkins recognizes qualifying students with certificates and access to many of the CTY’s summer enrichment programs.
In addition, exceptional students can qualify for the second level of the talent search and become part of the Study of Exceptional Talent (SET). This program is far more impressive than the standard CTY because it requires students to score at least 700 on the math or critical reading sections of the SAT. Qualifying for the SET is very prestigious and is highly recognized by top universities.
Students who want to qualify for the CTY Talent Search will need to take the SAT Jr in Moraga or a nearby city. The SAT Jr is similar to the regular SAT’s curriculum, except that the former has more extensive coverage on most of the sections, particularly math. This is designed in such way so that younger students will be exposed to some areas of math that they may have found to be complicated. This is why SAT Jr tutors want their students to focus particularly on reviewing math subjects.
If you want to get ahead on your SAT Jr exams, consider the services of a college prep institution such as Apex College Prep. College prep tutors will provide the tools, knowledge, and skills the test-takers need to succeed on the SAT Jr. Luckily, these skills can also help you prepare for tests during the regular school year, as well.
Apex College Prep provides the curricula that will help students become familiar with the SAT’s style through its three sections: Math, Writing, and Critical Reading. It also trains students to develop and enhance the following necessary academic skills to score well on the SAT Jr and SAT: analytical writing, critical thinking, problem solving, and vocabulary.
Apart from using a college prep institution to get you ready for the SAT Jr, here are a few other things that will help:
- Develop good study habits. Ask anyone (your parents and/or teachers) to help you practice your study habits.
- Improve your math and writing skills.
- Set specific goals.
- Take a skills and interest assessment to help you decide which career path is the most suitable for you. You can find this type of assessment online. Apex College Prep will also be able to guide you to the best assessment.
- Become a volunteer in your community.
- Enroll in a summer program (if you can afford it) to help you explore new subjects – academic or otherwise.
Taking the SAT Jr is recommended if you want to do apply to gifted programs such as the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Students, or any similar programs. Do what you can to build up your knowledge and skills in order to score well on the SAT Jr in Moraga.
